Diving - There are many wrecks in south hams water, a couple of companies run from Salcombe. www.salcombeinformation.co.uk Surfing - Bantham is great place for surfing, overlooks Burgh Island. Beware of the rip current it can catch even the experienced surfer out; fortunately there are lifeguards on duty during the summer season. Britannia Royal Naval College is now open to the public for tours, which can be arranged at the Tourist Information Centre. The College is a fascinating building and well worth a visit - especially as it is now the principal Naval Training establishment in the country. Burgh Island - The Island boasts the Pilchard Inn which dates back to 1336 and the fantastic art deco hotel, frequented by Noel Coward, Winston Churchill and many more, a setting for numerous TV and big screen productions. The Hotel was the setting for Agatha Christies novel "and then there were none" and "evil under the sun" www.burghisland.com Gardens - The South Hams enjoys a unique microclimate and benefits from one of the highest levels of sunshine in the U.K. One of the most spectacular gardens in the country is Dartmouth's Coleton Fishacre, particularly in the spring. Tel 01803 752466 National Trust members will also be interested to know that this year they will be able to visit Agatha Christie's gardens "Greenaways" overlooking the harbour. There are many other lovely National trust properties near by including Saltram House, Killerton House & A La Ronde. www.nationaltrust.org.uk Salcombe - Great for sailing, but not that much else as the town has evolved into a town almost solely catering to tourism, in the process it’s lost its soul. So head for one of Salcombe’s lovely beaches. Either north or south sands both great beaches although there's not much of them when the tide is in. There's dingy hire, and a cool cafe called the winking prawn. There's Lanacombe beach, just a short ferry ride from ferryman's inn. Kingsbridge - An honest market town without too many frills. A must is the Pig Finca cafe it’s wacky and original with great organic food, there’s a Pig Finka shop to visit afterwards. www.kingsbridgeinfo.co.uk Plymouth - If you feel the need to visit a city then Exeter is the best bet. Plymouth does have UCI Multi screen cinema, MacDonald Restaurants, Planetarium, KFC’s, Great Aquarium and Burger Kings www.plymouthuk.info Exeter - An interesting City, Museums, Shops, underground passageway and everything.
